Why MMA/UFC Fighters Suck at Boxing | thefightfanatic.com

Why is it that our favourite MMA & UFC fighters are transitioning to boxing and getting their asses kicked by pumped up YouTubers? Former world champion cage fighters are stepping out of the octagon and into the squared circle for some big paydays, putting their legacy on the line against influencers and bodybuilders, and they’re not doing so well. Let’s dive into some of the reasons why our favourite MMA fighters suck at boxing.

MMA and boxing are not the same. MMA fighters are multi-disciplined, and despite some fighters being exceptional kickboxers or preferring to box, they still don’t exclusively train in boxing. On the opposite end of the spectrum, professional (and even amateur level fighters like Jake Paul) boxers are specialists, they have one discipline which they practice to no end, and they excel in that one area.

MMA trains boxing, kicking, grappling, and wrestling. Boxing takes its pugilistic fundamentals and builds upon one discipline with footwork, evasive head movement, guard-play, and many, many more intricacies. Put it this way, if you represented an MMA fighter and a boxer as bar charts, and displayed their disciplines, you’d see two wildly different results.

The boxer doesn’t have to focus on kicking or wrestling because — obviously — they’re a boxer. This is the same for MMA fighters and their disciplines. If I’m 1600 ELO generalist in Chess, Checkers, and Othello, I’m never going to beat a 2300 ELO Chess specialist. Your favorite MMA fighter probably isn’t a specialist and won’t beat a boxer at their craft.

MMA striking doesn’t translate well to specialist sports. In MMA, fighters have to consider takedowns, so their hands hang low to protect their hips as well as their body and face. This doesn’t translate well to boxing since hands need to be up to defend the chin, but for MMA fighters it quickly becomes second nature to have their guard lower for defensive purposes.

MMA fighters typically have a tighter more squared stance to defend takedowns and to be in position to block kicks and kick back. They also rarely use evasive head movement or pivots because of the susceptibility to headkicks, knees, and grappling exchanges. This doesn’t translate well to boxing because those attributes are a prerequisite for having success in the boxing ring.

There are many more nuances between the two sports, but this would quickly turn into a book.

Like a lot of disciplines in life, even boxing can be pay-to-win. What most people don’t acknowledge before they denigrate fighters like Jake Paul and KSI, is that these kids are multi-millionaires with all the time in the world. They are getting the best gyms, money, coaches, nutrition, sports psychology — and god knows what else — that money can buy. This is why they’re mopping the floor with your favourite MMA fighters, as well as one other factor.

An unblemished record in boxing is a fast-track to money and stardom. So a risk-free approach to résumé building is employed with a lot of these influencer-types. 36 year-old Ben Askren had some of the most abhorrent striking in MMA history, 39 year-old Tyron Woodley was woefully outsized, and 47 year-old Anderson Silva was well beyond his fighting prime. You’ll likely never see an in-prime MMA fighter accepted to take one of these fights (barring Fury vs. Ngannou).

This article was created for my Dad, who couldn’t grasp why MMA fighters sucked so hard at boxing. I hope you liked this, Dad!

UFC 300: Dana White Announces BMF Title Fight & Veteran Matchup for Landmark Event

Dana White has announced Max Holloway vs. Justin Gaethje for the BMF title at UFC 300 on April 13. White also announced Jim Miller vs. Bobby Green for the same night. The UFC CEO announced the matchups on his socials on January 16.

Holloway will be moving up in weight class to challenge Gaethje at lightweight. The last time “Blessed” competed at this weight class was for the interim title against Dustin Poirier in 2019. Poirier soundly defeated Holloway and very nearly scored a knockdown – which is unprecedented for Holloway. The Hawaiian native has yet to be visibly rocked in the UFC, let alone knocked down, he maintains the records for strikes landed and strikes absorbed.

Gaethje last fought for the BMF title at UFC 291 in late 2023, knocking out Poirier with a spectacular head kick. As a native lightweight, “The Highlight” will possess a power advantage, and carries underrated cardio as demonstrated by his war with Tony Ferguson. It’s a tough outing for Holloway, certainly the biggest puncher he’s faced since Jeremy Stephens in 2015.

The other fight on the night pits two of the UFC’s most wizened veterans against one another. Jim Miller has had a career resurgence as of late, winning five of his last six bouts. Green hasn’t been so fortunate, having been knocked out cold by Jalin Turner in his last appearance. It would appear that White held to his promise that Miller would appear on the UFC’s landmark card.

UFC News: Manon Fiorot Secures Title Fight, Dominates Erin Blanchfield

Manon Fiorot has denied the title run of Erin Blanchfield at UFC Atlantic City.

The Frenchwoman outclassed Blanchfield across the 25-minute fight, scoring a 50-45 on each judge’s scorecard. Blanchfield had no solution to the range and refused to adjust throughout the fight, repeatedly running into Fiorot’s counterstrikes for the entire match.

UFC Atlantic City tied for all-time knockouts with eight and would have secured the record if not for Chris Weidman’s TKO being overturned on the main card.

READ: Chris Weidman Scores Double Eye-Poke Decision at UFC Atlantic City

With this victory, Fiorot extends her perfect UFC record to 6-0-0, handing Blanchfield her first UFC defeat in the process.

Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC via Getty

Blanchfield fights with urgency, and that’s good, but she lacks core fundamentals that cost her rounds. She doesn’t utilize a jab, nor does she respect the power of her opponents. Every time she storms in with the 1-2-1-2-1-2 flurry she risks being chinned — it’s just that the talent at flyweight can’t punish it.

The moment Blanchfield faces an opponent who can defend her takedowns and strike on the back foot with power, she’ll have huge issues. Her strikes lack venom, and I’m half sure some of her opponents could stand their ground and launch a big shot down the pipe mid-combo to end the fight.

Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC/GETTY

It’s an ugly way of fighting, and it’s worked so far, but I believe the longevity of her career is affected by the unnecessary damage, and soon enough an opponent will be able to put her out.

Blachfield’s style is built around collision, she storms into range without any head movement and aims to collide with her opponent. She only uses body lock takedowns where a single-leg or blast double would benefit her most of all. All Fiorot needed over 25 minutes was a check-hook, a side-kick, and a shove to win. I wouldn’t hedge my bet on either fighter becoming champion soon.

I also think it’s pretty damning that a top-3 fighter in a UFC division with world-class grappling, refuses to grapple and opts to run into punches for 25 minutes without adjustment.

Respect to both fighters in the end, regardless of technique they fought their heart out and delivered an entertaining fight.
