UFC 300 Results: Deiveson Figueiredo Taps Cody Garbrandt in Curtain-Jerker Fight | thefightfanatic.com

UFC 300’s curtain-jerker fight has ended quickly, with Deiveson Figueiredo winning his second bantamweight bout by submitting Cody Garbrandt in the second round.

It was classic ‘No Love’ in the first round as Garbrandt darted around his Brazilian foe, beating him to the punch and denying takedown attempts. The American easily stole the opening round, gearing up to create a considerable upset.

‘Figgy’ adjusted in the second round, opting to take the fight to the ground where he shined. After securing a takedown, Figueiredo secured a tight arm-triangle, but it was clear that Garbrandt wouldn’t quit right there- especially with a $300,000 bonus on the line.

Garbrandt tried to use his physicality to burst out from bottom position but unintentionally offered up his neck. Figueiredo snatched up a rear-naked choke and tapped out his American adversary late in the second round.

In his post-fight interview, the Brazilian demanded a bantamweight title shot, either against Sean O’Malley later this year or presumably against the winner of Merab Dvalishvili vs. O’Malley.

UFC Quote: Coach Rips 'Leech' Colby Covington in Brutally Honest Rant

Ray Longo, co-owner of Serra-Longo and coach to three UFC champions, including Aljamain Sterling, couldn’t have offered a more scathing critique of Colby Covington.

As far as UFC performances go, few have been met with as much scrutiny as Covington’s at UFC 296. The American fighter tanked his popularity when, after an all-time lackluster performance against Leon Edwards, he squandered the opportunity for fan-sympathy by doubling down on his character during his post-fight interview.

“You know I’ve had a long layoff so a bit of ring rust had something to do with it,” Covington admitted as the crowd began to boo. “But, I want to shout out all the first responders—” Covington’s shtick fell on deaf ears.

Covington, initially embraced by a crowd that favored him just 25 minutes earlier, found himself engulfed in a sea of boos and jeers. Despite the lingering pro-Trump and pro-troop sentiments in the air, the atmosphere remained unhealed, the wound too deep to be mended.

Longo, speaking on the ‘Anik & Florian‘ podcast on December 19, had some harsh remarks for the former interim champion:

“He can go f*** himself, couldn’t give a s*** about that guy,” Longo remarked. “What he did with Leon Edwards I think is atrocious. You know there’s promoting a fight and then there’s being a total misfit in life…”

Longo was disgusted by the insults Covington hurled at Stephen Thompson during the UFC 296 pre-fight presser:

“The guy attacks Wonderboy!” Longo exclaimed. “You see Wonderboy handle that? You can’t even attack him – that’s how nice the guy is… he’s calling the guy a pedophile — this guy’s a piece of s***.

“…Colby, you’re sucking the f****** life out of the community, just like a leech on society.”

UFC's Colby Covington Compares Leon Edwards' Father to Hitler in New Rant

Colby Covington still hasn’t backed down on his trash talk of Leon Edwards’ late father. In a new interview, “Chaos” has taken the feud to a new level, comparing Edwards’ father to genocidal dictator Adolf Hitler:

“I’m doubling down, why would I feel bad,” Covington said on the PBD Podcast on December 21. “— Anything I say about someone that is such a criminal and put so much pain in people’s lives, you know I’m not gonna feel bad for someone like that — just like Hitler! He was a terrible person, man.”

Covington insisted he wasn’t making a comparison, they were just “on the same level of bad guy”:

“I’m not comparing him to Hitler but I’m saying that it’s the same level of bad guy,” Covington exclaimed.

Covington mentions the engagement of Edwards’ father in criminal pursuits. Hailing from Kingston, Jamaica, Edwards endured harsh conditions, with his father actively participating in illicit activities to pull them out of abject poverty:

“I realized as I got a bit older why I was the first kid in my neighborhood to have a remote-control car and a bike,” Edwards told ESPN before fighting Kamaru Usman in 2019. “My father was involved in, let’s just say, questionable activities. Everyone would show him respect… I knew what he did — everyone knew what he did.”

The same continued when the Edwards family moved to the UK, with Edwards living in Aston, Birmingham, and his father working in London. Edwards’ father was shot and killed in a nightclub when Edwards was 13.

“We moved to Aston, a crime-ridden neighborhood in Birmingham,” Edwards told ESPN. “My dad stayed in London and we saw him on some weekends.”

In contrast, Covington’s origins trace back to Clovis, California, where he flourished with remarkable success in both high school and college, earning numerous accolades for his prowess in wrestling.

Before his 2017 bout against Demian Maia, Covington found himself on the brink of being released from the UFC. In response to this precarious situation, he crafted the polarizing persona that defines him today—and undeniably, it has proven to be effective.

Given his recent comments, Covington might have taken his “Chaos” persona too far, and a growing number of fans and pundits are eager to see him face some backlash.

MMA This Week: Next UFC, PFL, Craig Jones Invitational & More | thefightfanatic.com

August 12, 2024, is a stacked week for fight fans. Spectators are privy to a wealth of combat sports entertainment from the market leaders and an exceptional MMA regional scene.

The UFC’s middleweight title is up for grabs at UFC 305 this weekend, preceded by the PFL semi-finals, some great boxing, and a brand new player in the professional grappling space, Craig Jones Invitational. Let’s get into it.

Tuesday, August 9

  • Time: 7 pm ET / 12 am BST
  • How to watch: UFC Fight Pass

Dana White’s Contender Series (DWCS) 2024 begins this Tuesday, August 13. Five fights occupy the card, with a mix of regional champions and prolific finishers vying for a UFC contract. For casual fight fans, DWCS is a good opportunity to familiarize yourself with up-and-coming UFC talent without the commitment of sitting through an eight-hour event. Five high-quality matchups with decent pacing make for a quick watch on a Tuesday night.

Friday, August 16

  • Time: 6 pm ET / 11 pm BST
  • How to Watch: DAZN

PFL 8 is headlined by four semifinal bouts in the light heavyweight and lightweight PFL divisions. UFC veteran Impa Kasanganay rematches Josh Silveira in the main event, while Rob Wilkinson takes on Turkmenistani knockout artist Dovlet Yagshimuradov in the co-main. The card features the fan-favourite slugger Clay Collard and Muhammad Ali’s grandson, Biaggio Ali Walsh, in his second professional fight.

UFC vs. PFL: What’s the Difference?

While the PFL has some ways to catch up with the UFC, it still makes for great entertainment. The broadcast team and production are improving, and so is the roster of fighters (despite the main event being a rematch).

Friday, August 16 – Saturday, August 17

Craig Jones is here with his direct countermeasure to ADCC. A wealth of top athletes from the professional grappling world will compete for a $1M grand prize in several weight classes. Each competitor will be paid $10,001 to participate ($1 more than the ADCC awards tournament winners). Names include Tye and Kade Ruotolo, Nicky Ryan, Nicky Rodriguez, Luke Rockhold, Mackenzie Dern, and plenty more.

Jones will compete in the main event on Saturday against women’s grappling and MMA legend Gabi Garcia. All proceeds will go to charity.

Craig Jones Invitational will be free to watch on YouTube, FaceBook, and the BTeam website. Day one will be live on Friday, August 16 at 6 pm ET / 11 pm BST, and Day Two on Saturday, August 17 at 8 pm ET / Sunday 1 am BST. (Stream below)

Saturday, August 16

  • Time: 6:30 pm ET / 11:30 pm BST
  • How to Watch: UFC Fight Pass / ESPN+ / TNT Sports

Bad blood boils over in the main event of UFC 305 on Saturday, August 16. In the co-main, Aussie countrymen Steve Erceg and Kai Kara-France duke it out for flyweight top-contender status.

The fun doesn’t end there as dogged fan-favourite fighter Dan Hooker aims high in a fight with Mateusz Gamrot, heavyweight brawlers Tai Tuivasa and Jairzinho Roizenstruik go to war, and ‘The Leech’ Jingliang Li finally returns after a two-year hiatus.
