Martial Art Gyms in Birmingham – The Fight Fanatic

It might not seem like it, but there’s a diverse amount of combat sport gyms in the Birmingham area. From boxing to MMA, there are some world class organizations operating out of Birmingham.

I’ve put together a small guide to some of the best martial arts gyms in Birmingham in my experience. I’ve trained at most of these gyms, so I can testify to the quality of the training, facilities, coaching and pricing. I’m going to be updating this page with new information I find about other gyms as I go on my martial arts journey.

Links:

It’s worth clarifying that a lot of the MMA gyms will teach a variety of the martial arts covered in this article.

Best MMA Gyms in Birmingham

Team Fearless MMA

Fearless MMA is a very well esteemed MMA gym operating out of the Birmingham Jewellery Quarter. Only a 15 minute walk from Snow Hill Station, Fearless MMA has had a great presence on the national MMA scene, and has propelled some fighters onto the world stage. The most well known fighters that train at Fearless MMA are Leon Edwards, and Jake Hadley.

What’s good about Fearless MMA:

  • Cheap for the amount of classes you can access
  • Welcoming to all experience levels
  • 6 days a week gym access, and you can do multiple classes each day
  • Proper facilities, Octagon, weight lifting section
  • Super friendly atmosphere, coaches and staff
  • You know they’re good because they have fighters on the national circuit, and even on the UFC

Fearless MMA was established in 2009 by brothers Kaish and Kamby Banger. Kaish and Kamby were heavily influence by their father, a former wrestler in India. Fearless strive to bring the very best MMA training & facilities to people of all ages and gender.

I met both Kaish and Kamby and they were very friendly people, and were incredibly knowledgeable about their wrestling.

Pricing

You can get the full adults package for £60/m. This gives you access to all sessions, 6 days a week, including the weight training section, and you get a Fearless MMA shirt. They offer cheaper alternatives for students and younger persons.

Best Muay Thai Gyms in Birmingham

K-Star Muay Thai

Muay Thai is taught at both Fearless MMA and Renegade MMA. Otherwise, the specialist Muay Thai gyms in Birmingham are dominated by the K-Star brand. K-Star Muay Thai is a Muay Thai franchise spread across the West Midlands, they are the definitive Muay Thai experience in Birmingham, and have a multitude of fighters on the national scene, and provide training for fighters in the pro leagues.

You can find four K-Star Muay Thai gyms in Birmingham:

  • K-Star Thai Boxing Academy – Quinton
  • K-Star Muay Thai Academy – Solihull
  • K-Star Thai Boxing Academy – Birmingham City Center
  • K-Star Legacy – Oldbury

All of these gyms have elite pedigree Muay Thai practitioners coaching inside, but I’m going to touch on the Quinton and City Center branches, since I have trained at both.

What’s good about K-Star Muay Thai:
  • At the Quinton branch, the head coach Damien Trainor is a former world champion with a wealth of Muay Thai knowledge and elite striking skills
  • Fantastic Facilities
  • Decent price for the amount of sessions you get
  • Welcoming to newcomers
What’s not so good about K-Star Muay Thai
  • Expect to be treated more like a customer than a student
  • Contacting the gym isn’t an easy process

Whilst K-Star has its pitfalls, you can still expect to receive the best MT training in the West Midlands. Find them below:

Best Kickboxing Gyms in Birmingham

Eagle Kickboxing Academy

Eagle Kickboxing Academy is a short 10 minute walk from Snow hill Station in Birmingham City Center. The Academy is home to complete beginners, intermediates, amateur fighters, and some pros. The academy specializes in K-1 kickboxing, Muay Thai boxing, self-defense, strength and conditioning, fitness, boxing.

The head coach Alex Vorfi is extremely knowledgeable, friendly, and accommodating to new students. He’s fought in actual competition so you know you’re getting the correct teachings. The gym offers a free week trial to any new students, and the rates are extremely good for value.

This gym has really impressed me. Although the gym pushes you to your limits in order to better yourself, it’s never cruel. The head coach pays attention on an individual scale, and is very welcoming to those on all levels.

What’s good about The Eagle Kickboxing Academy:
  • 6 day a week access to facilities

  • Booking classes is extremely easy
  • Fast responses when contacted

I’m currently running the £55 a month membership which allows me to book four times a week. There is however a gold membership at £65 a month which is basically unlimited access to everything.

The Gane vs Ngannou Sparring Footage that everyone is talking about…

Ciryl Gane and Francis Ngannou are set to clash in the headlining event of UFC 270 this weekend. In the buildup majority of MMA media are trying to perpetuate an image that Gane and Ngannou are long time gym buddies turned rivals.

A major element of the promotion is the mention of sparring between the two heavyweights. Many claim Gane bested Ngannou in the gym, and now animosity is brewing between the two.

This sparring footage from the MMA Factory in France, shows Gane and Ngannou in light, friendly sparring. the footage is greatly edited, so it’s hard to draw a narrative from the footage. It would make sense that the video is edited in Gane’s favor since Francis defected from the MMA Factory, so smearing his image is in their best interest, as Gane is their next big star.

Gane and Ngannou sparring footage

It’s actually an unwritten rule, and considered bad etiquette to bring up or use sparring footage to discredit another fighter. What happens in sparring stays in sparring. Many great fighters get knocked on their ass, get knocked out, or take a beating in sparring. The difference is that those involved don’t end up using said footage or rumors to create a smear campaign.

It’s the equivalent of he said she said, except it’s about that time you got whooped in your 1200th sparring session. It’s inevitable that you’re going to get your ass beat at least once, when your day job is 9-5 simulated death matches.

People shouldn’t buy into these fake stories. The animosity was only woven since the two crossed paths in that hallway by chance. The only bad blood that’s conceivable is between Francis and his old coach, Fernand Lopez. This is because of Francis using the MMA Factory and then defecting to American gyms.

We’ll see the real Ngannou & Gane relationship after the outcome of the fight this weekend. Don’t be deceived.

What’s your take on the Gane vs Ngannou sparring footage? Comment below and I’ll get back to you.

Is Ciryl Gane the next Jon Jones level talent in the UFC? – The Fight Fanatic

Undefeated in Muay Thai and MMA, Ciryl Gane first graced the UFC octagon in August of 2019. In little over 2 years, Gane has gone 6 more bouts, achieved interim champion status, and is headed into title contention with the current UFC heavyweight champion, Francis Ngannou.

This level of progression is stellar, and what makes it more impressive is the level of experience Gane has. Most combat athletes at this level have been trained from childhood. Gane on the other hand has less than 10 years experience in both Muay Thai and Mixed Martial Arts; it’s astounding what he’s done in this time.

It begs the question:

What’s the ceiling for Ciryl Gane?

I think a metric of whether Gane is GOAT material is whether or not he dismantles Ngannou next year, but that’s yet to happen. We haven’t seen his limit yet, his striking was put into question when matched up against Russian giant Alexander Volkov, whom he dismantled. And his ability to handle power was doubted when paired against Derrick Lewis, in a fight Gane dominated to a brutal finish. Does this mean he picks apart Ngannou on the feet? He could just as easily see him clobbered in 19 seconds like Rozenstruik, who has had a fall from grace since being touted as an elite kickboxer at heavyweight.

Gane batters Derrick Lewis at UFC 265

We often see hot prospects rising through the UFC, but rarely do we see someone at Gane’s level, blazing into the ranks and destroying long standing UFC veterans without ANY hiccups along the way. It’s interesting to see how far he can take it, and a dominant victory over Ngannou and then some title defenses would solidify Gane in the GOAT discussion.

Why is Ciryl Gane so good?

Gane is exceptionally well rounded, and prior to his TKO finish of Derrick Lewis, he had a perfect 3 KO/TKO’s, 3 submissions and 3 decision wins. I think Gane’s most impressive and seemingly underrated aspect, is his insane cardio. I watched him live versus Volkov and more than once thought his cardio would surely give out at the pace he’s setting. No, it didn’t, Gane has 25 minute cardio for a 6’5 heavyweight, bouncing on the balls of his feet and setting a pace of which we haven’t seen from a heavyweight since the likes of Cain Velasquez and other cardio machines.

The level of striking coming from Gane is also super selective, efficient, and cruel. His game is one of reach and shot selection, which works in his favor when paired against typical slugger heavyweights like Lewis. A long teep and crippling roundhouse kicks to the body are his preferred weapons, but when it gets close he likes to mix is up with crisp boxing and beautiful clinch work.

In terms of his ground game, it’s something we haven’t seen too much of, but whenever Gane has been in a grappling situation, he’s dominated that facet of the fight as well.

Ciryl Gane heel hooks Don’Tale Mayes in just his second UFC bout

Who stands a chance against Ciryl Gane in the UFC heavyweight division?

Francis Ngannou

Ngannou decapitating Alistair Overeem with a crisp uppercut

First and foremost, and the most obvious of all, is the ‘Predator’ Francis Ngannou. I think stylistically in their upcoming bout in January, the matchup favors Gane as the quicker, more efficient of the pair. Gane may keep Ngannou at length with his front kick, and won’t backpedal when Ngannou blitzes, instead opting to more laterally out of danger.

I think, of course, Ngannou always has that ‘f*ck you’ power, and could shut the lights off in the first 10 seconds! It’s simple, yet effective, neutralize the skill gap by making it non technical and bully with the power.

Tom Aspinall

Tom Aspinall mauled Andrei Arlovski in their February bout

Less dangerous, but certainly in line for a title shot at some point is Tom Aspinall. The brit has fantastic boxing, speed and power. His boxing just seems to be a level above most opposition, who apparently can’t stand with the quickness and efficiency of Aspinall. I think this is less of a slugfest than the Ngannou matchup, and Gane is technically the more proficient fighter with a more rounded skillset.

Thanks for reading. What’s your opinion on Ciryl Gane? Does he get clobbered next year? Or is he the next great talent for the UFC? Comment below, it means a lot!

UFC Fight Night: Font vs Aldo – A Night of Pure Violence, predictions & analysis – The Fight Fanatic

Sharing is caring!

  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • LinkedIn

After the dismal night of decisions I witnessed the other week on the Miesha Tate vs Ketlen Viera card, It’s great to see a card full of guaranteed bangers like the one this Saturday where Rob Font and José Aldo finally square off. There’s numerous matchups to be excited for, so join me as I break down the main card and make my predictions! See if you can get more correct than me. Comment your opinion below, I’d love to hear it!

Before we begin, here are my predictions for the entire night, I’ll be placing £5 on these picks as a parlay with the hope to become a thousandiare.

Alex Morono vs Mickey Gall

I think Mickey Gall is better than a lot of people give him credit for; Gall has astounding grappling and a decent stand-up game. What gall actually lacks is fight experience, and his weird favouritism by the UFC is questionable (he keeps getting spots on main cards for basically no reason). Morono has legit wins over good name opponents like Donald Cerrone and Max Griffin, and has had competitive fights with other top names. Gall showed great composure in his last outing with Jordan Wright, almost knocking his opponent out before mauling him on the ground. I’m going to go out on a limb and take a risky pick here and say that Gall holds his own on the feet vs Morono, with his length, and dominates if it goes to the ground.

My pick – Gall by UD

Brendan Allen vs Chris Curtis

I picked Phil Hawes to win against Chris Curtis not long back. Hawes was winning handily before being clobbered by Curtis in spectacular fashion and my parlay went out the window. Curtis has real dynamite in his hands, but obviously lacks polish. If Phil Hawes can piece him up on the feet, then I think an established fighter like Allen will beat him soundly. Allen has proven his ability to withstand great power shots, and stand in the line of fire, like in his fight with Punahele Soriano last July. In my opinion, the puncher’s chance won’t be there for Curtis this time around.

My pick – Allen by UD

Clay Guida vs Leonardo Santos

Guida is still going! This isn’t an easy fight to predict, Guida has massive experience advantage, but he has a lot of losses and is probably on his way out. Santos on the other hand, has been around in the UFC for a while and holds only one loss in the promotion to Grant Dawson, who isn’t a pushover. Santos holds good wins over fighters like Kevin Lee (before he went on his losing streak), Adriano Martins, Anthony Rocco Martin and Steven ray. Santos also has a massive five inch height advantage, which should help nullify Guida’s forward pressure style, as well as bolstering his submission game on the ground.

My pick – Santos by UD

Jimmy Crute vs Jamahal Hill

I’m not seeing a lot of talk for this fight, it’s certified brilliant matchmaking. Crute is coming back from his shock loss to Anthony Smith, where he suffered a TKO via leg injury. Hill is also coming off of a TKO injury loss to Paul Craig, suffering a dislocated arm when he was caught in a submission. TKO injury losses aren’t the only thing that these two have in common, both fighters have spectacular heart and go out on their shield. Hill has a two inch height advantage, and presumably the reach advantage too. To make up for this Crute is stocky, and is much larger built than Hill. I don’t see Hill, being the taller but thinner man, being able to control Crute. Crute is the stronger fighter in this matchup, and has only been soundly beaten once in his career (not discrediting the Smith fight!), he also holds a win over Paul Craig, the man who broke Hills arm in his last fight.

My pick – Jimmy Crute by KO/TKO

Brad Riddell vs Rafael Fiziev

This has fight of the night written all over it. Brad Riddell is one of my favourite fighters in the UFC right now, Fiziev is up there too. This is as close to a mirror match as you can get, both men stand at 5’8, they each have records of 10-1, both have world class striking. Controversially I think Riddell may have the striking advantage, as he fought some legendary names in his kickboxing career. Riddell holds wins over John Wayne Parr (!!!) and Yi Long, and has fought the likes of Regian Eersel and Cédric Doumbé to decisions. Fiziev has equally had a great career in Thai Boxing, but I think Riddell takes the edge here. Where Riddell truly holds the advantage is his wrestling, if Fiziev proves to have the advantage on the feet, I see Riddell nullifying it with effective grappling and making the fight an ugly grind.

My pick – Riddell by UD

Rob Font vs José Aldo

“Aldo hasn’t faced a jab liked mine”, Rob Font claims. José Also has fought nothing but the who’s who of MMA for about a decade now, and he’s beaten most of them. Don’t let Aldo’s decline change your judgement, he’s a game opponent, and since winning and losing his championship, has remained in the top 5 consistently ever since. Rob Font is returning from a shock victory over a talented, but rudimentary Cody Garbrandt, and a knockout win over a fading Marlon Moraes. I don’t see Font winning this fight, because he plays Aldo’s game. Font is a stand-up fighter who prioritises boxing, Aldo is also a stand-up fighter who not only has fantastic boxing  (and crushing body shots), but he mixes it up with some of the most devastating leg kicks you’ll ever see. I see Aldo playing with his food in this matchup, It won’t be as competitive as people think.

My pick – Aldo by KO/TKO

Former Glory Kickboxing champion Alex Pereira to make his UFC debut this weekend at UFC 268 – The Fight Fanatic

The only man to ever knock out Israel Adesanya – Does he have what it takes to make a name for himself in the UFC?

Alex ‘Poatan’ Pereira (3-1 MMA / 33-7 kickboxing) makes his anticipated UFC debut this weekend on the prelims of UFC 268. Pereira is a towering middleweight standing at 6’4, with tremendous knockout power and kickboxing prowess.

Pereira makes his transition to MMA from kickboxing, where he was a Middleweight and Light-Heavyweight champion for Glory Kickboxing, the world’s premiere kickboxing organisation.

Pereira’s most notable career achievement, and that which fuels his hype coming into the UFC, is his decision and knockout victories over Israel Adesanya. The two men met once in 2016, and again in 2017 where Pereira floored Adesanya with a thunderous left hook, winning by knockout.

Pereira KO’s Adesanya with a crisp left hook

Debate has formed over whether Pereira can be the one to challenge Adesanya for the middleweight throne. Adesanya is clearly leagues above everybody else in terms of striking, and could meet his match yet again if Pereira can put some wins together.

Pereira enters his UFC debut with a MMA record of 3-1, and faces off against Andreas Michailidis, a relatively unknown fighter with 4 knockout losses, could this be a fight set up for Pereira to win? There’s big money in a Pereira v Adesanya grudge rematch!

What do you think? Do you think Pereira stands a chance against UFC calibre opposition? We’d like to hear your opinions, comment below!

UFC 268 – Usman vs Covington 2

With UFC 267 just gone by, UFC 268 is already upon us! Although it has lost some great potential with the Luke Rockhold pull-out, it’s still an exciting night of fights! Kamaru Usman will face his biggest rival, Colby ‘Chaos’ Covington for the second time, to solidify his championship reign. We’ll see the rematch of ‘Thug’ Rose Namajunas against Weili Zhang, as well as the people’s fight of the night, Justin Gaethje against Michael Chandler!

Let’s not forget appearances from Frankie Edgar, Marlon Vera, Shane Burgos, Edmen Shahbazyan and Al Iaquinta to name a few. Let’s dive right in from the bottom of the early prelims!

Ode Osbourne vs Carlos Vergara

Osbourne floors Jerome Rivera

Anticipate violence in the first fight of the night, as contender’s series alumni Carlos ‘CJ’ Vergara (9-2-1) takes on underrated Ode ‘The Jamaican Sensation’ Osbourne (9-4-0-1). Osbourne’s last fight was against Manel Kape, he was winning the fight before being finished with a flying knee.

Between both men, they have 14 finishes and 3 decision wins combined. ‘CJ’ in particular is on a five fight finishing streak, so expect fireworks.

We think Vergara has the upper hand in this matchup as the stronger fighter. Vergara has momentum from his last five fights and will make his UFC debut with something to prove. On the other hand, Osbourne has had a lacklustre UFC career, this fight may be make or break for ‘The Jamaican Sensation’.

Our prediction – Carlos ‘CJ’ Vergara by KO/TKO

Melsik Baghdasaryan vs Bruno Souza

Melsik Baghdasaryan

Two relative unknowns face off in the early prelims as Melsik Baghdasaryan (6-1-0) makes his second official UFC appearance, and Bruno Souza (10-1-0) makes his debut. Melsik, like Vergara previously, is another finisher, holding five knockouts in his six total wins. Souza on the other hand has six decisions (half being split decisions) with only three finishes and one DQ.

Souza’s weak resumé leads us to believe he won’t hold up against Baghdasaryan, who already holds a win in the UFC and has the power to end the fight at any moment.

Our prediction – Melsik Baghdasaryan by KO/TKO

Aleksa Camur vs John Allan

gettyimages-1200409449-3206272 Aleksa Camur

Both of these fighters have had a rough start in the UFC, but there’s no denying this fight will be dynamite! With a combined 17 finishes and 2 decisions between the fighters, it’s going to be high risk, high reward! Aleksa Camur (6-2-0) is the favourite to win, but has half the fight experience of John ‘The Hunter’ Allan (13-6-0-1).

This is a real coinflip fight, but with Allan’s larger resumé, we’re going to pick him over Camur to win. Allan hasn’t been knocked out in 20 fights, and has only been submitted or outpointed. Allan has also fought the better opposition in the UFC.

Our pick – John Allan by KO/TKO, otherwise, Camur UD

Gian Villante vs Chris Barnett

Chris ‘Huggy Bear’ Barnett (left)

On paper, this fight should deliver. Both men have plenty of knockouts to their name. This seems like a gimme fight for Chris ‘Huggy Bear’ Barnett (21-7-0), who made his UFC debut against Ben Rothwell, losing a miserable, sweaty, exhausting decision that utterly failed to impress. The UFC matchmakers seem keen to give Barnett sloppy fights, as Gian Villante (17-13-0) is a hit or miss fighter who probably shouldn’t be on the UFC roster any more.

We see several outcomes, Barnett knocks out Villante or cruises to a tiring UD win, or Villante comes with something to prove and pulls off an unexpected win.

Our pick – Barnett by KO/TKO/UD

Ian Garry vs Jordan Williams

Ian Garry makes his UFC debut after conquering Cage warrios

Jordan ‘Bomaye’ Williams (9-5-0-1) without a doubt has the power to knock out anybody he’s placed in front of. Williams was a hot prospect from DWCS who was thrown immediately to the wolves versus Nassourdine Imavov, and was then granted a gimme fight in Mickey Gall, who proceed to submit him with a RNC. In short, Williams has failed to deliver on the world’s biggest stage, but this is his chance to regain that momentum.

Ian ‘The Future’ Garry (7-0-0) is yet another Irish Cage Warriors champ coming to the UFC to make a name for himself. We think that the lack of diversity in William’s arsenal is his prime downfall in this matchup. Knockout power can only carry you so far, and he showed a lack of expertise on the ground versus Mickey Gall in their match. Garry has proven at least once to submit opponents, and has the ability to see fights to the final bell as well as produce knockouts. For this reason, we have Garry winning this fight, it just feels like they’re throwing Williams to the wolves yet again.

Our pick – Ian Garry by UD

Edmen Shahbazyan vs Nassourdine Imavov

Edmen Shahbazyan

These two men are on even grounds, with Edmen taking the slight advantage in level of opposition. Edmen ‘The Golden Boy’ Shahbazyan (11-2-0) can’t catch a break, though, with his last two fights being losses to two of the top five in the division! Nassourdine Imavov is coming off of a recent KO win over Ian Heinisch back in July, previously losing to Phil Hawes, and before that beating previously mentioned Jordan Williams via UD.

This is a real coinflip fight, but we think Edmen has the edge with his higher level of opposition. Edmen has fantastic striking, great grappling, and hopefully he’s improved his cardio for this fight. Having lost only to the top of the division, we think Edmen takes this.

Our pick – Edmen by UD

Phil Hawes vs Chris Curtis

Phil Hawes defeats Kyle Daukaus by UD

Phil ‘Megatron’ Hawes (11-2) is having an exceptional run in the UFC, with wins over the aforementioned Nassourdine Imavov, and recently top prospect Kyle Daukaus. Chris ‘The Action Man’ Curtis (26-8) on the other hand, is making his anticipated UFC debut, after a long sting on the regional circuit and on PFL. Curtis has plenty more losses in a variety of fashions, but one thing is for sure, he has a lot more fight experience than Hawes. However this doesn’t count for much if the opposition isn’t of a high level, and Curtis has lost most of his high profile matchups. Hawes has won his high level matchups, and because of this we believe his resumé to be stronger.

Our pick – Hawes by UD

Al Iaquinta vs Bobby Green

Al Iaquinta holds two wins over Kevin Lee!

‘Raging’ Al Iaquinta (14-6-1) makes his long anticipated return to the octagon, last appearing in 2019. Bobby ‘King’ Green (27-12-1) has been more active as of late, and is equally a veteran of the sport. Iaquinta holds some impressive wins in his career, such as two wins over Kevin Lee, a decision victory over Jorge Masvidal, and a KO win over Diego Sanchez. Much credit also goes to Iaquinta for taking Khabib to a decision.

Bobby Green may not have the big wins on his resumé, but he’s fought some of the best, and has only lost to top contenders in his career. Green is coming off of a decision loss to Rafael Fiziev, and the fact he can take someone like Fiziev to a decision and make it competitive even in the tail end of his career, says a lot about his ability coming into this fight.

We believe Green has what it takes to derail Iaquinta’s comeback, though Iaquinta is resilient enough where we don’t think there will be a finish.

Our pick – Green by UD

Alex Pereira vs Andreas Michailidis

Alex Pereira with a vicious left hook KO

Former Glory Kickboxing world champion Alex ‘Poatan’ Pereira (3-1-0) makes his much anticipated UFC debut against Andreas ‘Spartan’ Michailidis (13-4-0). Pereira is the proud owner of middleweight champion Israel Adesanya’s only knockout loss in his combat sports career. It is the grudge match between Adesanya and Pereira that we imagine the UFC would like to push, granted Pereira can be successful in his debut.

Michailidis has an impressive record of 13-4, with a mixed variety of knockout and submission wins, and all of his losses coming from KO/TKO. Standing 4 inches taller than Andreas, Pereira will undoubtedly have the reach advantage, and without question the striking advantage considering his background. Alex has out of this world knockout power, mixed with his kickboxing expertise, so we expect a Pereira knockout to fuel the Adesanya rematch narrative.

Our pick – Pereira by KO/TKO

Frankie Edgar vs Marlon Vera

Marlon Vera

Fan favourite UFC veteran Frankie ‘The Answer’ Edgar (24-9-1) makes his return after a shock 30 second KO loss to Cory Sandhagen last February. Frankie takes no step down in competition as he takes on absolute assassin and division dark horse, Marlon ‘Chito’ Vera (17-7-1). This is Vera’s chance to prove himself amongst the top of the division, as although Edgar is at the tail end of his career, he still only has losses to the very top contenders, ever since the beginning.

‘Chito’s’ last proper loss was to José Aldo via UD, before that, he lost a (robbery) decision to Yadong Song, snapping his five fight winning streak. Vera is a killer at bantamweight, and with Frankie being 40 years old coming off of a stiff knockout loss, we believe ‘Chito’ has what it takes to claim the W.

Our pick – Vera by UD

Shane Burgos vs Billy Quarantillo

Shane Burgos vs Cub Swanson

This fight has every right to be a banger. ‘Hurricane’ Shane Burgos (13-3-0) is an absolute warrior and always brings the heat, and Billy Quarantillo (16-3-0) isn’t so bad either. Burgos, with less fights overall, has been fighting at a higher level than Quarantillo, with wins over the likes of Cub Swanson and Makwan Amirkhani. ‘Hurricane’ Shane has recently come up short against top contenders Edson Barboza and Josh Emmett, which is nothing to be ashamed of.

Quarantillo has been on a steady uptrend, but we believe Shane has what it takes to claim either a TKO or a UD victory. This is granted he has recovered properly from the Barboza loss, which, bare in mind, was still a competitive fight to a degree.

Our pick – Burgos by TKO/UD

Justin Gaethje vs Michael Chandler

Gaethje putting it on Michael Johnson

This is the fight everybody wanted, and it’s sure to deliver. Justin ‘The highlight’ Gaethje (22-3-0) and ‘Iron’ Michael Chandler (22-6-0) are both spectacular knockout artists. On paper, It would be easy to assume that Chandler would have the advantage with his explosiveness against a more stationary Gaethje. We don’t think this will be the case.

Chandler’s fighting stance assumes a wide legged pose, in order to control the ring and spring forward with power or double legs when necessary. Gaethje’s primary weapon is his tenderizing leg kicks, and he preys on opponents with wide stances. We believe Gaethje will chop at the legs of Chandler, forcing him to slow, where Gaethje will apply pressure and secure a TKO win.

Our pick – Gaethje by TKO

Weili Zhang vs Rose Namajunas

Weili Zhang

Weili ‘Magnum’ Zhang (21-2-0) and ‘Thug’ Rose Namajunas (14-4-0) return for their immediate rematch after a shocking round 1 head kick KO by Namajunas in their first fight.

Namajunas executed a game plan perfectly, capitalizing on a lazy technique Zhang was trying to employ which was taught to her by Seanchaí. We fret that Zhang won’t make the same mistake in the rematch. As shown by her fight with Joanna Jedrzejczyk, Zhang can apply the pressure and has five round cardio at the highest output, so Namajunas won’t be able to outpace her.

Rose will do well with her selective striking, picking apart Zhang on the feet. Most people believe Zhang’s fight with Joanna was a walkover, but it was competitive, and we think that although she has the grit and the cardio, Zhang’s striking just isn’t as good as Namajunas.

We see a Rose vs Andrade 2 style UD win for Rose.

Our pick – Rose by UD

Kamaru Usman vs Colby Covington

Kamaru Usman – Welterweight Champion of the world

The fateful rematch is finally here. Colby ‘Chaos’ Covington (18-2-0) is the biggest rival of current welterweight champion Kamaru ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ Usman (19-1-0), and came the closest to taking the belt in their first match.

Colby and Usman are practically a mirror image of one another. These are pressure heavy, volume striking, cardio machines with a similar win/loss ratio and resumé. In their first fight, Covington came close to gold, potentially going 2-2 into the round where he lost via TKO. Covington’s striking was clearly better than Usman’s in that match, and their cardio was equal.

Since then, however, Usman has fought thrice, and Covington once. Usman has partnered with world class coach, Trevor Whitman, and his striking has improved by leaps and bounds.

It’s for this reason that we believe Usman will win this fight, either by KO/TKO, or by UD. Usman’s inadequate striking is no longer a flaw in his game, and he has become a truly well rounded mixed martial artist. Don’t get us wrong though, this should be a competitive fight.

Our pick – Usman by TKO/UD

Khamzat Chimaev manhandles Jingliang Li on his way to a decisive submission victory at UFC 267

Khamzat ‘Borz’ Chimaev (10-0-0) dominated Jingliang Li (18-7-0) at UFC 267. ‘Borz’ secured a first round submission over ‘The Leech’ just over 3 minutes into their bout. With this win Khamzat most likely secures his spot in the welterweight top 10. He silences any doubters who thought he hadn’t proven himself against top opposition.

Khamzat manhandled and destroyed the UFC’s 11th ranked welterweight and didn’t even absorb a single strike. This moves Khamzat’s strike differential to 254-1 in the UFC, which is insanely impressive.

What’s next for Khamzat Chimaev?

The next fight for Chimaev could be in the welterweight top 10. Now lets take a look at some of the most notable opponents and how Khamzat might match up.

View our predictions for UFC 267 and see how they played out.

The top 5 opponents for Khamzat Chimaev in the UFC welterweight division

  • Leon Edwards
  • Neil Magny
  • Stephen Thomson
  • Gilbert Burns
  • Kamaru Usman

Khamzat Chimaev vs Leon Edwards

Leon Edwards

Leon ‘Rocky’ Edwards (19-3-0) has been a main staple in the UFCs welterweight division for almost 8 years now. Edwards has an exceptional striking game, solid wrestling and ground game, and the patience of a saint!

This fight is intriguing, as Leon is a very patient point striker, who excels at clinch fighting and trips.

We feel that Edwards doesn’t have the wrestling pedigree to deny Khamzat the takedowns he needs to dominate the fight. Granted Leon could deny a takedown we think it’d be competitive on the feet.

What we think about Edwards vs Chimaev – Chimaev via. Submission or UD

Khamzat Chimaev vs Neil Magny

Neil Magny

Neil ‘The Haitian Sensation’ Magny (25-8-0) has been calling Chimaev out for a fight every other week. Magny poses as an interesting matchup, as a proven wrestler with smothering offense. Magny is a natural point of progression for the Chechen native, being ranked within the top 10. A victory over Magny would put Chimaev in contention for a spot in the top 5.

Magny is a strong wrestler but he struggles with large, stronger opponents. Magny’s last defeat to Michael Chiesa saw him out-muscled and out grappled to a UD loss. By all means Magny provides a wrestling threat, but nevertheless he doesn’t have the level of striking to deny Khamzat on the feet.

What we think about Chimaev vs Magny – Chimaev via. UD

Stephen Thomson

Stephen Thomson

Shining personality Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thomson (16-5-1) is one of, is not the best striker the UFC has to offer. Wonderboy actually has a kickboxing record of 58-0! That said, a majority of ‘Wonderboy’s’ decisive UFC losses have come at the hands of overwhelming grapplers like Tyron Woodley and most recently Gilbert Burns.

Further to the point, Gilburt Burns applied a very heavy grappling game plan and smothered ‘Wonderboy’ for the unanimous decision victory. The outcome of the fight depends on whether Thomson improves his wrestling defence as a result of the loss to Burns.

We anticipate that Chimaev vs Thomson would be a mirror match of what happened with Burns. ‘Wonderboy’ has the ability to deny Khamzat with his elite karate striking, but on the other hand he doesn’t have the wrestling pedigree to prevent the inevitable takedowns.

What we think about Wonderboy vs Chimaev – Chimaev UD, if Wonderboy can stay on the feet, Wonderboy UD

Gilbert Burns

Gilbert Burns

Brazilian phenom Gilbert ‘Durinho’ Burns (20-4-0) is the second most dangerous man in the UFC’s welterweight division. Burns combines a hyper aggressive striking style with his masterful Brazilian jiu-jitsu to become one of the most threatening forces in the division.

Burns hasn’t slowed after his TKO loss to champ Kamaru Usman, proving his spot with a smothering domination of Stephen Thomson last July. It’s this aggression, grappling expertise and willingness to exchange on the feet that makes us think ‘Durinho’ could be the one to test Khamzat the most, if not take his 0!

Burns proves he has world level BJJ, mixed with his mauling striking, he’s a force to be reckoned with on the feet and on the ground.

What we think about Burns vs Chimaev – Burns by UD/TKO/SUB

Kamaru Usman is the undisputed welterweight king

Kamaru Usman

‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ Kamaru Usman (19-1-0) is without equal. Usman is the undisputed king of the UFC’s welterweight division, and is showing no signs of slowing down. We’ve seen Usman dispatch of several top 10 fighters, most recently Gilbert Burns and Jorge Masvidal.

‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ is an apt name for Usman, who demonstrates some of the best cardio the UFC has ever seen, mixed with a relentless wrestling attack, and as he’s proven recently, an improved striking game to be feared.

Kamaru is the ultimate test for any fighter in the 170lb division, and we think he has the standout striking game, relentless wrestling and endless cardio to beat Khamzat in dominant fashion.
